Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge #8 - Christmas in July

Sugar and Spice Challenge #8
Christmas in July

Time for the Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge again!  This challenge we were asked to make something for the theme "Christmas in July".  So with all the warm/humid weather we are having it was very hard to get into Christmas, but I put my thinking cap on and decided to use my new stamp, Winter Snow Globe, from Papertrey Ink that my daughter gave me for Christmas. I got out the embossing tools and went to work. First I used a Sizzix embossing folder and embossed my cardstock.  After stamping Santa and the snow globe, I then colored santa with a red marker.  Next, I embossed the snowglobe and snowflake over Santa with Stampendous star dust-(I'm sorry bad pic. but just couldn't get a better picture today).

I took my versa stamp pen and colored the inside of the globe (the red did bleed some but I liked the effect) I then heat embossed that with Zing clear embossing powder. I used my MFT circle dies and layered with paper from Studio Calico Wonderland collection.  I stamped HO HO HO for my sentiment using the same paper and layered an MFT banner in red because the sentiment to make it pop.  I love the effect, it gives a 3-D look to the globe. The snowglobe stand has been heat embossed with a light coat of white embossing powder to give it a snowy look.  I think I will be making these again and many more.  This stamp collection also comes with a snowman, christmas tree and cute little sentiments.

My second card is pretty much the same except I did use the clear zing inside the globe and you can see a much cleaner look. You can also see the star dust embossing powder much better.  This card was stamped with a smokey grey ink then heat embossed over, colored the tree and lites with markers.

Thanks for dropping by.  I really hope you play along and enter the Sugar and Spice Challenge.

Sugar and Spice Challenge #7 Patriotic

Our 7th Challenge is Patriotic

When Sherri from Sugar and Spice put the new challenge out there for the designers I was very excited to see what we would come up with.  I myself felt very proud to be doing a card in honor of Canada's birthday, July 1st.  While putting my thoughts together I decided to keep it fairly simple and clean and try to do justice to Canada's red and white colours.

I embossed both the red and white background papers using the Darice bark/wood grain embossing folder, to me this resembled our beautiful maple trees here in Canada. I added a maple leaf brad - painted it red and white like our flag. The butterfly is die cut with an Elizabeth crafts die (one of my favourite).  This just reminds me of all the pretty butterflies we start to see this time of year.

I really hope you get inspired and feel the love for your country like I have.  Please join us and submit your entry to Patriotic - Red and White or White, Red, and Blue Sugar and Spice Challenge.  Can't wait to see what you come up with and maybe even see which country has more submissions.

Happy Canada Day - July 1st and to our Red White and Blue neighbour's on July 4th.

Sincerely, Leah

Sweet Treats Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge #6

It's time for another Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge. Challenge #6 is called Sweet Treats  and we were to use cupcakes or any sweet treats. My first card I used scraps left over from my last album I completed.  It was made with some of my favourite colors.

I used my cupcake stamp, then fussy cut it out. I wasn't pleased with the results so I ended up using 2 different stamps (one for the bottom & another for top).  Pieced them together and just applied pink stickles to the icing. By layering a mft border die cut on top and bottom I feel it really brought the focus to the cupcakes. I finished it by applying 3 small white and brown buttons tied with bakers twine.

My second card was also done with left over scraps (great way to use them up). This is a 5x5" card only but packs a lot of punch with the coloring I've used.  I used one of my larger cupcake stamps again fussy cut and only used bottom portion-then used little flowers in the same colors as the polka dot patterned paper..applied and tied a bow, then glued little glass embellishments to the center on flowers and tear drops on all 4 corners of top layer. My sentiment is stamped in olive green and versa marked and embossed with zing clear powder.

Hope you will play along with us at the Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge!  The deadline is June 15th , 9 pm (PST).

Thanks for dropping by!

Welcome to Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge #5

It's time for another Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge. Challenge #5 is called Mixed Patterns  and we were to use 2 or more patterns. I had so much fun using up my scraps I made two cards. My first card I used scraps left over from my last album I completed.  It was made with some of my favourite colors and patterns.  Pinks, browns and butterflies.

I pulled out my punches and scissors and went to work creating I love my hobby.  Bottom layer is cut with scissors and is done in pinkish/orange hounds tooth pattern. Next layer again cut with scissors done in soft pink and a flour de lis pattern. Gray layer was punched with a fiskers punch and is a polka dot monotone pattern.  Forth layers is a herringbone pink pattern, punched with another fisker punch. I then layered a shiny brick pattern for a little glitz. My final layer is straight cut and done in a butterfly pattern.

I tied a bow with very light pink ribbon around all the layers then applied it to a background of the same gray paper that I used in my layers...I feel it grounded the whole card. Used the herringbone pattern paper on my sentiment and stamped Happy Birthday.  My final step was to apply the butterflies with a little glitter glue for sparkle. Overall this card turned out so pretty -  I will be giving to a very special person!

My second card was done with scraps from the DCWV All Dressed Up paper stack.  Kept this one pretty simple, letting the paper and colour pop.  I chose  flower, polka dot and a striped glitter patterns and applied them to a pink background.

I created my sentiment from MFT label die and stamped a polka dot pattern with wishing you the sweetest things sentiment.  I used my black Pearl Pen and applied 3 dots to the label. Very much a girlie girl card!

Hope you will play along with us at the Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge!  The deadline is May 25th, 9 pm (PST).

Welcome to the Sugar & Spice 4th Challenge

It's time for the Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge again!  The theme this time around is April Showers Brings May Flowers.  I decided to make a card for a shower I will be attending in May and the bride's theme is shabby chic with lots of pink.  I had a real challenge coming up with the layout on this one.  I really wanted to use my MFT umbrella die, but just couldn't bring it together.  In the end, I let the paper work for me.  My paper is from Paper House and called Beaches - it's a 6x6 mini pad. The paper behind the umbrella reminds me of raindrops on a stain-glassed window and I used the stripes to show rays of sunlight.  Hence April/May Showers are always followed by sunlight and pretty flowers.

I cut the solid umbrella in a yellow scrap from my stash and also the pink pieces layered on top. I chose to pop up the center of the umbrella and used 2-way tape on just the corner edges and top of umbrella giving it a 3D effect. I also added very thin ribbon on the edges of the background of the paper the umbrella is on.

The sentiment is also from the same die and stamp set.  I chose to stamp the sentiment with StazOn and back the banners with black card stock to make it pop even more.

I stamped hearts verses rain drops and used stickles to sparkle them up. I applied a scalloped border cut from the same scraps of pink as the sentiment.  The die is from Sizzix long border die called Dots & Scallops. I layered all on the light blue background then applied it to the white card stock base.  In the end I was very pleased with the result. One hard lesson I really learned  is don't try and take photos out side on a windy day, it blew away and landed in my rock garden and damaged the one corner.  I fixed it the best I could and it will be usable.  I can smile about it now.

Once again thank you all for taking the time to entry Sugar and Spice Challenges.  We are very honoured to have Butterfly Reflections Ink sponsor our next challenge and I would like to thank her very much.

Design for Suger and Spice Challenge #3

Here we go again!!  Are we up for the 3rd Challenge for Sugar and Spice...I know I am.  This was a fun card to make.  I worked on adding some Easter Happiness to it. I hope you agree. I used DCWV Shimmer Matstock paper in pastel shades. My background was embossed with Sizzix Embossing Frame Design, then I hand cut an egg shape and embossed it with my Darice Cherry Blossom embossing folder.

I hand painted the flowers with my watercolor pencils using pink, blue, yellow, dark and light greens.  I then sanded the surface lightly and rubbed with Tim Holtz distress Frayed Burlap ink to pop the flowers slightly.  I trimmed it with white lace, adhered it to the blue embossed layer, then applied it to a white card base.   My sentiment letters were stamped individually with versamark then I used Recollections ebony detail embossing powder. I felt there was too much white so I dotted with Zig Clean Color Real Brush paint pen in the same colors I used to paint my flowers on the egg. I popped the sentiment by layering darker green under it.
I choose to embellish with 2 white feathers and I made a bow with some leftover yellow ribbon and applied a rinestone butterfly. I hope I have inspired at least one person to go through your stash and see what your imagination can come up with.  Hope you will play along with us at Sugar and Spice Challenge!  The deadline is April 13th, 9pm (Pacific Time).

Thanks for dropping by!!!

Sweet Sunday SSSC212

I am submitting this card as part of the Sweet Sunday Challenge.  I tried to stick to the sketch as closely as possible.

I found it very challenging to design a card using single layering, so in the end I decided to use pop ups on the top two stars.  My choice of paper was 6x6 My Minds Eye Lime Twist, all paper on the card is from this collection. Stars are cut from my new dies Shapez by Zyron.  PS got a great deal from Scrapbooking Made Simple 12 sets of dies under $50cdn. mailing included.  Check it out sometime, she has great deals changing all the time. Sentiment is stamped in black Brilliance ink, then I used lime glitter glue by Studio g to sparkle stars and sentiment layer.

I choose to set the layer on a black card base to really pop the whole card. I love the chevron pattern and my new star dies can't wait to use them again.

Thanks for the challenge!

Thinking of You

Hi it's time to get involved in more challenges!!!! So I am submitting one to Curtain Call Inspiration Challenge and it's the Farm Fresh theme.  So here we go....I really enjoyed doing this card.  It is so me.

I choose to use BoBunny Apple Cider 6x6 paper pad collection and what can be more Farm Fresh then plaid, earth tones, and apple cider . I choose this paper first because it highlights my Stamped sunflower embossing. I then used my watercolor pencils to color and blend it; using yellow, orange, rusty door, and brown. I felt it was still missing something so I used glossy accents in the center and applied gold micro beads. I then fussy cut the sunflower and popped it with some pop ups.

This picture of my card shows the sunflower popped. I also inked using Tim Holtz walnut distressed ink around the edges of the plaid and laid it on a kraft card base.

I choose to really pop my die cut sentiment by colouring and shadowing it. I love my free form layout...again it reminds me of Farm Fresh Country. Lastly I slipped 2 silk leaves under the sunflower, I believe it brings the whole card together without pulling your eye too far from the sentiment.

 Thanks for the challenge!

Sugar and Spice Challenge #2

Hi, everyone!  This is my very first blog post.  My daughter helped me create my blog, so we could both participate in challenges together and I'm happy to say I have now been able to access it and learn how to update and hopefully be able to add my own updates.  Scrapping and diving are two of my passions, hence my blog title.  From time to time, you may see some underwater pics here.  But for now, I'd like to share my work for a newer challenge blog.
The Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge was created to inspire and promote crafty fun through creating together.  The second challenge's theme is Mint Chocolate!  Create something using mint and chocolate (or brown).  I had to make a masculine card, so I put my thinking cap on and came up with this.

I used an older sketch from My Favorite Things WSC - #58.  I liked how abstract this sketch was and thought it would work well.

The brown paper comes from an old Die Cuts With a View paper pad I had. And the mint paper came from DCWV Textured Cardstock - Brights long slim paper.

I layered the Starform stickers to get the shadow effect for my sentiment.

Then I added the big white button with We R Memory Keepers baker's twine at one side of the banner.

Hope you will play along with us at the Sugar and Spice Crafty Challenge!  The deadline is March 30th, 9 pm (PST).

Thanks for dropping by!
